Short history of this company and its follower, the currently active and famous Spyker automobielfabrieken (Spyker cars):

In 1880 the Spijker brothers started a coach and carriage factory in Hilversum. In 1886 they moved to the Stadhouderskade in Amsterdam, where they started producing automobiles around 1900. One of the last coaches they produced is the famous Golden Coach, a present to the Dutch Queen Wilhelmina from the citicens of Amsterdam, on the occasion of her ascent to the throne in 1898. This coach is still in use by the present queen every year at the opening of the Dutch parliament.
A small booklet (32 pages in Dutch and in full colour) describes the history of the accomplishment of this extremely expensive couch (it costed 40 times the amount of the most expensive couch in the Spijker product range), and the many artists of fame who worked to decorate it with beautiful paintings, ornaments and symbolism (twelve men had worked for two years to build it). This booklet is available here: price 25 € + shipment costs.

In 1901 the Spijker brothers started to build Benz cars in licence under the name Spijker-Benz. For this purpose a new factory was built at the Amsteldijk in Amsterdam with the name Industriële Maatschappij Trompenburg, after the former homestead of Cornelis Tromp at that location (These offices and factory are shown here as letter heads of the paper factory Nestelroy Trompenburg that used these buildings in the period after 1925, when the Spyker car factory closed down; this letter head can be bought for € 25 (à € 50 for the perfect condition) ). In 1903 the name Spijker was changed into Spyker, easier for use abroad. In that year they built a car that was the first in the world with 6-cylinders, permanent 4-wheel drive and 4-wheel brakes, the 60 HP GrandPrix racer (60 pk). This car still exists and can be seen in the Automobiel museum in Raamsdonksveer.

In 1907 the Spyker 14/18 HP Tourer finished as second in the first Peking-Paris rally. The brand became world famous and was called the Rolls Royce of the continent. The Dutch Queen Wilhelmina bought two Spyker cars in 1911.
In 1907 Hendrik Jan Spijker died in a ship disaster, after which Jacobus withdrew from the business. In 1909 Spyker built the first Dutch ambulance.

In 1914 Spyker merged with the Dutch Aircraft Factory N.V. and the axiom became: "Nulla Tenaci invia est via" (for the tenacious no road is impassable). The logo became a combination of a wire wheel and an aircraft propellor. In 1915 de airplane pilot Henri Wijnmaken became director until 1922. In 1919 they launced the Spyker 14/18 with remarkable aerocoque body, clearly inspired by the airoplanes Spyker built earlier. The Spyker C4 held a motor designed by Wilhelm Maybach. During the first world war 100 Spyker fighter-planes and 200 aircraft engines were produced by what was now "the NV Nederlandsche Automobiel- en Vliegtuigfabriek "Trompenburg" (the Dutch Automobile and Aircraft works Trompenburg". A few shares of this company from 1916 exist in the collector's market. Trompenburg went not broke but had to stop the production in 1925. On May 26th 1926 the inventory was auctioned. The company had produced ca. 1500, 2000 or even 3000cars (I have red, three numbers) and held more than 100 patents in its name.

Spyker Cars
Many years later, the rights for the name Spyker were bought for Spyker Cars (at that time Spyker Automobielen BV), founded in1999 by entrepeneur Victor Muller (born around 1960 and automotive manager of the year 2006) and co-founder and car designer Maarten de Bruijn. In 2000 the Spyker C8 Spyder was introduced, 75 years after the last Spyker had been built in 1925. This hand made car reflects in its design the combined car-airoplane history to a large extent. See the specifications and photo's or watch in full screen the fantastic 7 minute video driving and racing the C8 (have patience with the intro or move the timebar). On May 27th 2004 Spyker Cars became listed under that name on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange. In that year three models were being hand made in the works at Zeewolde: the Spyder 215, Laviolette and Double 12. In 2002 and 2003 they participated in the 24 hours race at Le Mans. In 2006 some 100 cars were produced and Spyker made its debut in the Formula 1 racing scene, racing in Le Mans and Sebring (USA). In 2006 Spyker introduced a Super Sports Utility Vehicle, The Spyker D12 Peking-to-Paris (see photos and video !). Also, Have a look at all car models of Spyker Cars NV sofar per ultimo 2007.

Spyker C12 Zagato (click on photo for enlargement)

On March 6 2007, Victor Muller, Andrea Zagato and Adrian Sutil unveiled the Spyker C12 Zagato at the 77th Geneva International Motor Show. Designed and to be built in association with Italian couch builder Zagato, the new sports car is called Spyker C12 Zagato. It is an all aluminium rear wheel drive sports car, rigged out with Formula One race car details suchs as an F1 nose, scoop, chimneys, fuel flap and diffuser and a five-speed automatic gear box with F1 style shifting.

And again in the movies .......
Spyker cars featured in two major movies recently: A Spyker C8 Laviolette in the film Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction, and two Spyker C8 Spyders and a Spyker C12 La Turbie feature in the film ROGUE with Jet Li (driving the Spyker C8) and Jason Statham.

Some financial developments in Spyker Cars NV
In March 2004, before the listing at the Amsterdam stock exchange, Victor Muller and Maarten de Bruin both held 32,5% of the shares. John de Mol 28,5 % (through his investment vehicle Talpa). Project developer Hans Hugenholz 6,5%. Together 100 %. At that time 48 persons were employed.

In November 2006 Mubadala Development Company (the investment company of Abu Dhabi) invested 7,5 million € in Spyker. In 2007 the company faced severe financial and other difficulties and could therefore produce much less cars than the year before. During that year The Spyker team must have gained strength from their axiom: "Nulla Tenaci invia est via" (for the tenacious no road is impassable). In order to generate cash the Formula-1 racing team was sold in september 2007 to the Indian entrepeneur Vijay Mallya (62,5 % owner of United Breweries, the one but largest drinks company in the world) and the Dutch entrepeneur Michel Mol for € 88 million. Ultimo 2007 mr. Mol sr. and jr. held together still ca. 28% of the shares of Spyker cars. In july 2007 Muller held 14,81 % of the shares and per ultimo 2007 only 8,76 %. He does not decide himself to sell as he has given his broker a so called "free hand". The holdings of Merchant Bridge Managers had diminished from 7% to 4,48% per ultimo 2007.

The Russian banker Vladimir Antonov (born ca. 1965) is giving a financial injection of another € 34,5 million, in december 2007 and january 2008, through Snoras Bank in Litauen, part of the Russian Convers Group that is controlled by Antonov. He buys 2,3 million shares in december'07 and another 2,3 million shares per January 21st 2008 for € 4 per share, totalling 18,575 million €. Besides he gives a loan of 6,34 million, replacing a loan of the Friesland bank. Another 9,56 million is in the form of a 7% convertible loan. By this, Antonov may in due time end up with 29,9 % of the shares. He asked Victor Muller to become CEO again after he had stepped down for a while in view of the financial and publicity difficulties.
Antonov sponsors 2 Ferrari's that participate in the 24 hours race in Le Mans, through his companies Snoros and Convers.

Spyker Cars plans to bring out a smaller number of different vehicles and to raise production numbers considerably to 500 / year. A chief operating officer, experienced in car production management has been appointed.
