Johann A. Benckiser founded a business in Germany in 1823. Its main products were industrial chemicals. Benckiser went public on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange in 1997. But already in 1999 the company merged with Britain's Reckitt & Colman to form Reckitt Benckiser Plc, listed on the London Stock Exchange and one of the FTSE 100 largest companies with ca. 25.000 employees world wide. They carry famous brands in chemistry, household and cleaning products, pharmacy and body care, such as Airwick, Durex condoms, Vanish, Calgon, Dettol, Lysol, Cillit Bang, Air Wick, Strepsils, Clearasil, Glassex.

I. t. t. wat ik elders in de verzamelwereld heb gelezen, is het bedrijf niet opgegaan in het Unileverconcern. Nadat de directeur/eigenaar, J.M. Zwerver, midden jaren 50 overleed heeft de familie eind jaren 60 het bedrijf verkocht aan Duyvis (bekend van de pinda's etc.) Dit Zaanse bedrijf is op een gegeven moment gekocht door AKZO, dat een tijdlang een levensmiddelendivisie had.
Maar ca. 20 jaar geleden werd het (Vlaardingse) Zwerverbedrijf gekocht door de Koninklijke Smilde Groep, die ook margarine maakt in Heerenveen. In 2006 heeft Smilde het bedrijf, waar jaren bijna niets in geinvesteerd was, als management buy-out gegund aan 1 van haar managers, de heer Bart van den Briel, die nu in Vlaardingen de scepter zwaait.
Er wordt nog steeds margarine gemaakt, vooral voor de export naar ca. 60 landen, onder verschillende merken. Het bekendste Zwervermerk was Romi.
Het bedrijf is dus nooit in handen van Unilever geweest, dat was altijd een formidabele concurrent (bron: dhr. Alco Wiersma, Bilthoven, persoonlijke communicatie 25-6-2008). Lees meer over caseïne.

Het aandeel is uitgegeven in het jaar na de fusie in
1967 van de in 1869 opgerichte Nederlandse Gist- & Spiritusfabriek
te Delft met Brocades Stheeman & Pharmacia. De fameuze historie van
deze bedrijven wordt mooi beschreven door W.
Wennekes (1993) p. 141 - 195. Een citaat: "geen negentiende-eeuwse
Nederlandse werkgever bracht op sociaal gebied meer tot stand dan de
grondlegger van de Nederlandse Gist- & Spiritusfabriek te Delft,
dhr. Jacques van Marken (1845-1906).

based Chemical Industry conglomerate; in 1999 it became (again)
independant from the German Mother firm Hoechst and became listed at
the German stock exchange. with an introduction price of about 16 Euro.
In 2003 it had a turnover
of 4,3 billion Euro with 10.700 employees, working in 24 factories and

research institutes in 10 countries in North America, Europe and Asia.
In
April 2004 The American venture capital Blackstone Group has
received approval for buying the company at a price of 32,50 Euro,
about double the introduction price 4 years ago. The bid has a value of
3,1 billion Euro including
debts and pension fund obligations. Until now the Kuwait Petroleum
Corporation
held 29% of the stock of Celanese.

The company was the result of a merger, in 1967, of the nation wide
dairy distributor Foresmost and McKesson & Robbins. In 1984 the
name was changed into McKesson Corporation. After the merger
Foremost-McKesson became the largest U.S. distributor of drugs,
alcoholic beverages and chemicals, the largest supplier of
milk-based
products and it became also the largest producer of processed water in
the western half of the U.S. Throughout the 1980s they divested most of
their peripheral businesses and began the process of refocussing
on
its core healthcare supply management businesses. Today McKesson
Corporation is the world's leading supply management and health care
information technology company, with roots in health related products
going back as far as 1833.

Rexall, later Rexall Drug and
Chemical Comp. and later Rexall Sundown has in 2000 become part of the
Dutch company Numico.
Numico paid 1.800 million $ in
2000, had only head aches from this acquisition and was glad to be able
to resell it in june 2003 for only 250 Million $ to NBTY.
